Our Historic Square awaits you!

In the mid 1800's, the quaint Swiss settlement of Monroe took root in the
beautiful rolling hills of south central Wisconsin. Soon, Monroe became the hub
of local commerce and in its center grew a handsome Victorian town square
punctuated by the perfect fairytale courthouse. Steeped in old world traditions,
the restaurants, pubs and specialty shops of Monroe offer a soothing retreat
into the r
elaxing environment of rural Wisconsin.  We haven't yet graduated to
the hustle-bustle of the big city, but we do offer a sophisticated shopping
district full of interesting merchandise not usually found in malls, including
seven women's clothing stores and a quality shoe emporium, jewelry, gifts,
antiques and home decor galore.   We also have a wide variety of service
e
stablishments ready to meet your business and personal needs.  Our
European heritage is evident in our architecture, our food, our language, and
our products, and we would love to share them all with you.
Monroe is the heart of Green County,
the "Napa Valley of Cheese".

We are the epicenter of cheesemaking in the Midwest, with 13 rural cheese
factories dotting the surrounding countryside, and nowhere can you find a greater
selection of award-winning cheeses than at our legendary "Baumgartner's Cheese
Store & Tavern." Opened the day after the end of prohibition in 1933, this
charming gathering spot offers a fun peek into the past where you'll experience
unique traditions developed over three quarters of a century. Of course, you
wouldn't want to miss a taste of "Chocolate Temptations," a palm reading at "The
Dilly Bean," Lace curtains at "Europa," or a tour of "Minhas Brewery," where you
can sample "Lazy Mutt Beer" (Man's Best Friend), along with a tasty array of their
other bottled beverages. And you'll never be hungry in Monroe. We specialize in
"Wisconsin gourmet cuisine," ranging from hearty Cheddar Cheese Chowder,
Bratwurst, and Limburger & Onion Sandwiches to exquisite Beef Wellington with
Bordelaise Sauce made from scratch by a chef trained in Switzerland.  Be sure
you don't miss the "Roesti," our signature potato dish, or all of the homemade
pastries designed to send your taste buds to the moon. And in Monroe, you'll
delight in the personalized service you will receive from small-town business
people who appreciate your being here.  This is a place where people will
remember your name and treat you like a friend of the family, not a stranger with a
credit card.

Our town & country atmosphere provides an easy-to-access getaway for city
dwellers and country residents alike. Our accommodations are clean, comfortable,
affordable, and up to date. We have several modern motels and a few sweet bed &
breakfasts ready to provide you with a relaxing stay. There is art, history,
entertainment, and lots of beautiful countryside for your recreation and enjoyment,
including miles of scenic bike trails.

No matter where you're from, the people of Historic Downtown Monroe will greet
you with open arms.
